McMaster University was established as Toronto Baptist College in 1881 as an initiative approach by the baptist to promote education in the society. Later funds were gathered by the very first President of the Canadian Bank of Commerce to merge the Toronto Baptist College and Woodstock College.
The university was given the official assimilation under the 1881 Act to merge the two colleges. The first courses were the BA in Theology and Arts. The official degree programs started in 1894.
